Fillies Friday Night Out & Barbecue Evening August 8th Preview
Thursday, 7 August 2014
The Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes and the Canford Cliffs Stakes are the highlights of Friday evening’s seven race card at Tipperary racecourse. Both races are Listed and worth €50,000 each.
The Abergwaun Stakes over five furlongs, has been won in recent years by some top quality horses including last years winner Russian Soul, who went onto win Group 3 races in both Meydan and the Curragh. 12 months on, Russian Soul again takes his chance in the race and is the top rated horse in the race at 111. Since his Group 3 win at Meydan in February, he was out of the top five twice in a row but was second last time out to the top class Darwin, with Jamesie behind him. That was the second time the well travelled Jamesie has been behind Russian Soul but there was little between them last time, so another close one could be on the cards on Friday. Tim Pitt’s Sir Maximilian and John Butler’s One Chance both make the trip across the water for this race after One Chance’s fourth last time out in Listed company at Sandown. Sir Maximilian came late to win at the Curragh in July and finished seventh last week in a top quality handicap at Goodwood. Also in this race is last year’s third Abstraction who was disappointing since that, but a break of 169 days may be what he needs to get back to that form.
In the other Listed race of the evening, the Canford Cliffs Stakes over seven furlongs, Dermot Weld’s Tombelaine is the probable favorite after his second last time out in a Group 3 at Leopardstown to the top class Gleneagles. A head behind him that day was Ger Lyons’ Convergence who also takes his chance on Friday and can once again go close. Aidan O’Brien won this race last year and has one in the race this time around in the form of East India. The Galileo colt won first time out last time, and while the form of that race hasn’t worked out, he is one that is also sure to feature. Outside of the top three, it looks unlikely there will be much to challenge.
Of the other races on the day, the Connolly’s Red Mills Handicap is a competitive one. Tylery Wonder has placed in some valuable handicaps while Lady Mega was fourth to Sir Maximilian last time out in a top quality handicap in the Curragh, with Shipyard behind her in fifth. Looper is an exciting prospect for John Oxx in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at 7.40. The filly was an eye-catching third last time out when finishing very strongly at Fairyhouse. In the final race of the evening, Lily The Lioness is an extremely interesting runner after her two placings in Galway over hurdles last week. The versatile mare also won over fences here on July 20th and on the flat at the end of June, and is back on the flat this time over 1m4f.
There is some top quality racing on offer at Tipperary Racecourse this Friday for Fillies Friday Night Out & Barbecue Evening so be sure to come along and enjoy the evening.
