A strong, exciting card is entered for the feature races on Saturday, July 9th at Tipperary Racecourse. The €62,500 Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle (Grade 3) has been an important guide to the upcoming Galway Hurdle over the years. In all, there are 12 horses entered in the 2 mile hurdle, with four trained by Willie Mullins including Sempre Medici, who won the Limestone Lad Hurdle (Grade 3) in Naas in January and the Red Mills Trial Hurdle (Grade 2) at Gowran Park in February and went on to run in Cheltenham and Ascot. Also entered by Mullins is Simenon, who won this race in 2014, Thousand Stars; who was second to Diakali in this race last year and went on to win over fences in Auteuil and Ivan Grozny; winner over 2m in Aintree this April. Gordon Elliot could be represented in the feature race by Tocororo, winner over 2m at Fairyhouse and Ballinrobe this year, while other notable entries include Joseph O’Briens’ Plinth, who won the Istabraq Hurdle (Grade 2) here at Tipperary in October last beating Thousand Stars. Alan Fleming enters The Tullow Tank, who was second to Gilgamboa (Enda Bolger) in The Ryanair Gold Cup Steeplechase (Grade 1). 3 time winner over hurdles Rashaan is a notable entry for Colin Kid, who finished second to the Aidan O’Brien trained Slow Motion in Fairyhouse this March beating Tocororo.
The €47,500 Coolmore Excelebration Tipperary Stakes (Listed) has an exciting card of 20 entrants. Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien could be represented by four horses in the 5 furlong event, headed by Peace Envoy; Listed winner over 6f in Naas this may and second to Medicine Jack in the Gain Railway Stakes (Listed) at the Curragh in June. Other notable entries for Aidan O’Brien include Intelligence Cross, a son of War Front who won over 6f in the Curragh in June, Istan and Sportsmanship. There is a chance of father-son rivalry on the day as Joseph O’Brien has two entrants; most notably Ambiguity, who won over 5f here at Tipperary in April defeating Istan. Joseph could also saddle Hyzenthlay for the Listed event, who broke her maiden over 5 furlongs in Navan this April. Mirdif is an exciting entry on the day for Michael O’Callaghan who won well beating Istan (Aidan O’Brien) over 6f in Leopardstown last month. The race has also attracted a number of other leading yards including Michael Halford, who could saddle Yulong Baebei, a winner over 5f in Dundalk in May, beating Madam Bounska who is an entrant for Denise Foster in this race. Also entered are Paddy Prendergast’s Callender; winner over 5f in Navan this May and John Murphy’s Confrontational, who won comfortably over 5f in Down Royal in June.
Andrew Hogan, Tipperary Racecourse Manager said “Saturday July 9th is set to be one of our biggest days of the year with some excellent horses entered. The mixed card on the day means that there will be something for everyone. We have strong entrants for both National Hunt and Flat racing on the day, which we are thrilled about especially for our two feature races, the Grade 3 Kevin McManus Bookmakers Grimes Hurdle and the Listed Coolmore Excelebration Tipperary Stakes”.
