Murphy hoping to bow out with a fairytale finish

BLACK ZAMBEZI, who contests the 2m4f maiden hurdle at Gowran Park (2.35) on Saturday, will be Colm Murphy's final runner as a trainer following his announcement last month he was quitting the ranks due to financial reasons.

A 16-year career has yielded many big-race victories and high-profile winners, most notably Brave Inca, whose ten Grade 1 successes included the 2006 Champion Hurdle, plus two runnings of the Irish Champion Hurdle.

He also enjoyed six Grade 1 wins - notably the 2010 Queen Mother Champion Chase - with Big Zeb, while Feathard Lady, Quito De La Roque and Voler La Vedette were also top-level winners for his yard in Gorey, County Wexford.

Black Zambezi returns to action from an absence of almost two years in a bid to give Murphy a memorable end to his career.

Thought a lot of him

Regarding the seven-year-old's prospects, Murphy said: "Black Zambezi will be my last runner. He hasn't run since Christmas 2014 after getting a serious leg injury when finishing fourth on his hurdling debut at Leopardstown.

"We thought a lot of him as a young horse and he won his bumper first time out at the same Gowran meeting he runs at on Saturday. We're hoping he runs well but you'd have to think he'll improve for the run."

He added: "We've had some very good years and were lucky to have some very good horses and owners. The decision to give up was a business one and we thought long and hard about it. It's time to move on."
